M10.00001: John Wheatley Award: ICTP-SAIFR (2021): A South American Center for Theoretical Physics Invited Speaker: Nathan Berkovits Throughout the world, institutes for theoretical physics are created to organize topical workshops and perform high-level research. But because of unstable funding and bureaucracy, there are very few such centers in Latin America. As director and vice-director of the ICTP in Trieste, F. Quevedo and S. Randjbar-Daemi invited me in 2010 to direct the first ICTP Partner Institute in São Paulo called the ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-SAIFR, ictp-saifr.org). With support from São Paulo State University (UNESP) and the São Paulo State Research Funding Agency (FAPESP), ICTP-SAIFR formed a scientific council chaired by IAS director P. Goddard and began activities in January 2012 in the IFT building of UNESP. |

M10.00002: Andrei Sakharov Prize (2020): Scientific Espionage, Open Exchange, and American Competitiveness Invited Speaker: Xiaoxing Xi Amid rapidly escalating tension between the United States and China, professors, scientists, and students of Chinese ethnic origin as well as those engaging in academic collaborations with China are under heightened scrutiny by the federal government. Law enforcement officials consider collaborating with Chinese colleagues “by definition conveying sensitive information to the Chinese.” In 2015, I became a casualty of this campaign despite being innocent. This experience gave me insights into the challenges Chinese scientists face and the immediate threat to the open environment in fundamental research. In this talk, I will urge the audience to rally around the JASON Report commissioned and endorsed by the NSF and speak up to defend Chinese colleagues against injustice, safeguard open fundamental research on university campuses, and protect American leadership in science and technology. |

M10.00003: SecondMuse - Entrepreneurship and Building Economies of the Future Invited Speaker: Todd Khozein The global pandemic has exposed the fragility of our existing social, political and economic systems in stunning fashion. While some of these weaknesses can be addressed through incremental improvements, there are more fundamental flaws that will need deeper and more holistic thinking. This presentation will discuss how entrepreneurs and the ecosystems that surround them can present a unique opportunity not only to bring new technologies to market in service of solving major global challenges, but how in doing so entrepreneurial ecosystems can begin to build entirely new and more cohesive economies. SecondMuse has brought thousands of entrepreneurs to market and has a capital management arm that is designing new financial mechanisms specifically to this end. |
