L01.00001: Max Delbruck Prize in Biological Physics (2021): From individual motion to group behavior: what regulates collective dynamics in natural swarms of insects Invited Speaker: Irene Giardina Experiments on swarms of insects show that these groups obey robust statistical laws, thereby supporting a physics-based approach. I will discuss how, when modeling these systems starting from the data, three crucial ingredients must be incorporated in their theoretical description: activity, behavioral inertia, and mutual alignment. I will first consider small sparse groups, where interactions play no role, and show how to extract from experimental data information on the order of the dynamics, on inertial terms and on the active potential regulating the speed of individuals. Then, I will consider larger and denser groups, where interactions are strong and correlations are long-range. In these groups dynamical correlation functions exhibit dynamic scaling, with a non-trivial dynamic critical exponent. Both the value of the exponent and the shape of correlations indicate that behavioural inertia is needed to explain the large scale behavior in the critical regime. |

L01.00002: Max Delbruck Prize in Biological Physics (2021): Equilibrium to off-equilibrium crossover in homogeneous active matter near its ordering transition Invited Speaker: Andrea Cavagna In active matter systems as flocks and swarms, off-equilibrium effects are due to the interplay between the effective alignment interaction and the dynamical rewiring of the interaction network, which gives rise to a non-Hamiltonian coupling between density and velocity, as a consequence of which heterogeneous density structures may emerge. It therefore seems that the coupling between density and velocity stays at the very core of off-equilibrium active matter. |

L01.00003: Hydrodynamics of collective cell migration: the good, the bad and the chiral Invited Speaker: Luca Giomi Despite originating from the attempt of describing flow in water, hydrodynamics has now crossed the boundary of classical fluid mechanics and surged as general theoretical framework for modelling the dynamics of large wavelength and low frequency excitations in arbitrary continuous media: from electron systems to biological materials. In this talk, I will review our recent theoretical and experimental efforts towards modelling the collective motion of cells at the large scale using active hydrodynamics. In particular, I will focus on the statistics of chaotic motion in spindle-like epithelial cells and on the role of cellular chirality in open and confined environments. |

L01.00004: Flow, fluctuate and freeze: Epithelial cell sheets as soft active matter Invited Speaker: Silke Henkes Epithelial cell sheets form a fundamental role in the developing embryo, and also in adult tissues including the gut and the cornea of the eye. Soft and active matter provides a theoretical and computational framework to understand the mechanics and dynamics of these tissues. |
