The stellarator optimization code SIMSOPT has been adapted to optimize coils for a linear system. One way for linear magnetic mirrors to overcome large scale MHD instabilities is through the use of minimum-B quadrupole fields that add good magnetic field curvature. However the minimum B coils are non-axisymmetric and introduce enhanced radial transport from neoclassical effects, a feature that is shared in general by stellarators. SIMSOPT has been used to make orders of magnitude advancements in reducing particle losses in stellarators by both targeting particle losses directly, and by creating magnetic fields that have improved confinement capabilities. We adapt these tools to a mirror system in the search for coils that satisfy plasma stability and confinement metrics as well as engineering concerns.
