Zr at CERN’s n_ToF facility.*

Little is known about the prompt gammas released when ⁸⁸Zr captures a neutron. Using data from CERN n_TOF, this project investigated the prompt gamma signal from the ⁸⁸Zr(n,γ)⁸⁹Zr  reaction. Because ⁸⁸Zr and its daughter ⁸⁸Y are highly radioactive, they created a strong background which made it difficult to identify the prompt gammas released during neutron capture. When comparing the total signal to the background for this experiment, there was a range of gamma energies where it was difficult to separate the signal from the background. We will present our methods for subtracting the background from the signal in an attempt to observe the prompt gammas at higher energies. Characterizing these prompt gammas will provide insight into the excited states of ⁸⁹Zr and allow for updates to nuclear datasheets.
