Photodynamic Therapy is a non-invasive treatment, involving the interaction between the photon, a photo-sensitizer, and oxygen. This interaction produces the formation of a highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) and these high reactive oxygen species react with susceptible cellular organic molecules, possibly inducing gene mutation or gene mutation. These diseases are caused by the accumulation of heme precursors which can lead to photosensitivity, liver damage, neurovisceral involvement, and the increase in risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.
In this study, various molecules that can scavenge the reactive oxygen species from normal cells were modeled and analyzed using computer simulation. Isomers of porphyrin, a photosynthesizer, were analyzed and compared to each other to investigate the efficiency of the biochemical molecules by analyzing the structural and stereochemical properties of porphyrin-DNA complexes.
