Using the merged neutral beam method we study this type of reactions, in which an internally excited particle collides with a secondary particle whos ionisation energy is below the internal energy of the primary one. Products can be the bare ion from the secondary reactant, a dissociation product thereof, or a complex ion between the primary and secondary reactants. By making use of the polarisation imparted on the primary reactant, which in our case is metastable neon, as it is guided in a magnetic hexapole, we can study reactions with oriented particles.
The talk will show our recent results on the angle dependent branching between the abovementioned channels for reactions of metastable neon with rare gases as well as molecules, covering the energy range from 0.02. to 700 K.
