Fabrication and programming of nanomagnet arrays for nanoscale magnetic field synthesis*

Nanoscale magnetic field synthesis finds applications in band structure engineering, nano-particle manipulation, and local spin resonance. In the presence of a 1D spatially rotating magnetic field, the band structure of a 1D electron system without spin-orbit coupling can be engineered such that an effective spin-orbit (SO) gap appears in the energy dispersion. Inside the effective SO gap the spin degeneracy is removed. We present our results on fabricating nanomagnet arrays using two magnetic materials with distinct coercivities, programming the nanomagnet arrays using a global external magnetic field, and characterizing the magnetization configuration using magnetic force microscopy.
