S32.00001: Containerless Research, Inc., a Niche Science Enterprise Invited Speaker: Paul Nordine CRI filled a science niche in the study of high temperature materials that required new instruments that can eliminate the need for reactive containers and make non-contact measurements at extreme temperatures. In its own research and through collaborations that employed CRI instruments, contamination-free materials synthesis and processing at temperatures up to 3000K and measurements on liquid metals at temperatures greater than 4000K were made. The talk will discuss the historical basis for this work, the scientists that made it possible, some of the results, and ideas that facilitated project funding and instrument sales at this small business science enterprise. |

S32.00002: Intellectual Property for Entrepreneurs: Master or Disaster? Invited Speaker: George Chen Do you know what it takes to be the master of your own intellectual property? Don’t make the same mistakes that others have made, and instead, learn about real-life disasters regarding patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Hear actual stories about the significant differences between sole ownership and co-ownership of intellectual property, what is permitted under the “fair use” of someone else’s intellectual property, the consequences of waiting too long to protect your intellectual property, and much more! |

S32.00003: Exciting Opportunities for Physicists: Bridging the Chaos Between Science and Markets Invited Speaker: Kenneth Bradley After experience at a large corporate research center and a national laboratory, the speaker was drawn to problems of using scientific and technical advances to address problems defined by the marketplace. The presentation will focus on both the satisfactions and difficulties of seeking and implementing solutions to such problems. |
