An Infrared Imaging Calorimeter for FuZE-Q*

We have built and deployed a robust¹ imaging calorimeter consisting of an infrared camera viewing a multi-coated sapphire window substrate in a pinhole configuration on the FuZE-Q sheared-flow stabilized Z-pinch. Since the achievable time resolution is only 1 millisecond (both due to camera exposure time and thermal response of the thin film layers), only single frame imaging of the ~ 20 microsecond duration plasma is possible. Nevertheless, since the system is absolutely calibrated we can determine the total radiated energy from the plasma (including possible fast neutrals). The post-shot pressure pulse from the pinch would preclude conventional thin-foil based measurements. Results from gold and platinum coated commercial sapphire Conflat port windows will be presented.
