Calibrating and testing ICF models across the NIF database*

The accumulating database of ICF experiments on the NIF offers an expanding view of hohlraum and implosion performance across a wide range of input conditions. Radiation-hydrodynamics models are used to design and understand these experiments but need calibration to match data in a local parameter space due to the complexities of the multiple physical processes involved and the necessary simplifications in the models. Here we apply a consistent model across a suite of NIF experiments. With this approach, we can see how the agreement with the model changes for different experimental inputs. We also show the impact on hohlraum dynamics of various physical processes, like cross-beam energy transfer, laser-backscatter, multi-species hydrodynamics, and self-generated magnetic fields. We find that with modest adjustments to gold emissivity, the energetics of the implosion can be brought into good agreement across a range of conditions. The symmetry of the implosion, however, is much more challenging to model and we discuss prospects for improving that agreement.
