IPS-FASTRAN Integrated Modeling for Tokamak Pulse Simulation and Fusion Pilot Plant Design*

IPS-FASTRAN provides a set of flexible theory-based integrated modeling workflows for Tokamaks, built upon the High Performance Computing (HPC) Integrated Plasma Simulator (IPS) framework. IPS-FASTRAN has been extensively used for advanced tokamak scenario development of the present-day devices such as DIII-D and KSTAR, ITER projection, and future reactor design studies such as EXCITE, CAT, FNSF, KDEMO and ARC. One of the new enabling capabilities is a large ensemble simulation by efficiently utilizing HPC built upon the robust and resilient workflows of IPS-FASTRAN at scale, which has opened many new applications such as optimization of reactor and tight coupling to AI/ML workflows. The modular IPS-FASTRAN approach supports multiple-fidelities with multiple-level integration of the nested workflows using the localized surrogate model as a part of the high fidelity pulse simulation and theory-based fusion reactor design. Recent progress on IPS-FASTRAN integrated modeling will be presented including the pulse simulation with TGLF and EPED from plasma current ramp-up to termination validated against DIII-D and KSTAR, and Uncertainty Qualification (UQ) analysis for statistical/interval assessments on the target fusion performance parameters with sensitivity indices for the Fusion Pilot Plant design.
