Status of the magnetized indirect drive implosion project on the NIF*

Application of a 27 T external magnetic field to a room temperature indirect drive gas-filled capsule implosion on NIF has been shown in experiments to increase the temperature 40% and the yield by 3-times [1]. The results provide confidence for testing the performance improvement of magnetizing a cryo-layered deuterium-tritium implosion. This requires several technological developments including a cryogenic pulser system and the demonstration of an axisymmetric ice layer with a magnetization coil on the hohlraum. We will discuss the status of the pulser technology, ice layer control, and ongoing experiments investigating magnetized HED science relevant to indirect drive implosions on NIF and the Omega laser. These studies include magnetized shock propagation and magnetized laser-plasma interactions including cross-beam energy transport (CBET).
