The pulsed polarimetry technique [2] enables the inference of both the electron density, ne(s), and magnetic field B||(s) via the measurement of the backscattered intensity and the progressive Faraday rotation. With large Faraday rotation, the internal magnetic field can be resolved to 10 cm spatial resolutions. This requires intense 10’s mJ THz pulses with wavelengths in the 100–200 micron range and sub-ns pulse durations. However, such powerful THz sources do not currently exist.
In this paper we investigate generation of powerful THz radiation by intense laser irradiation of wires [3]. The simulation results are compared with experiments at the multi-terawatt (MTW) laser at University of Rochester [4]. Study of optimized wire and laser parameters is also presented.
