Transition to Turbulence in ICF Capsule Implosions*

We simulate an indirect-drive NIF cryogenic capsule experiment, N170601, requiring multigroup radiation diffusion to transport x-ray energy from the cylindrical Hohlraum to the target capsule.  The 3D simulation model involves miscible material interfaces and 3T plasma physics treatments. We use relatively coarse 2D runs through onset of turbulence, followed

by mapping to highly resolved 3D mesh with suitable 3D seed-perturbations.  Challenges coupling 3D hydrodynamics and multiphysics are discussed in this context.  Elaboration of

the results presented includes analysis of the vorticity production budget and transition signatures, evolution of quantities of interest and their uncertainty analysis, and comparisons

with NIF data.
