Study on Interaction of Sweeping Jet and Highly Accelerating Cross-Flow Stream*

A specially oscillating jet known as a sweeping jet in a highly accelerating cross-flow is investigated using 3D Unsteady RANS solutions. This study was conducted to understand the aerodynamics of the interaction between a sweeping jet and a highly accelerating cross-flow stream. The sweeping jet produced by a fluidic oscillator is injected through a hole on the surface of a flat plate. A contoured wall is placed against the flat plate to produce a desired favorable pressure gradient so that the cross-stream flow over the flat plate mimics the flow over the suction surface of a VKI-LS89 NGV profile. Two orientations of placement, known as reversed and forward configuration were examined at different blowing ratios. The complex flow physics is also characterized using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis. The results show that the interaction of the jet stream with the cross-flow is significantly affected by the direction of injection. The reversed configuration of injection increased the interaction between the sweeping jet and the cross-flow stream. This causes intense mixing and higher diffusion of the jet in the cross-flow compared to the forward configuration.
