Multiple Ruptures on Curved Liquid Sheet Produce Spinning Twisted Ribbons and Ejecta*

The fragmentation of liquid sheets, including bubbles bursting and droplets splashing, plays a critical role in diverse areas such as aerosol formations, diseases transmission, inkjet printing, and spray coating. Typically, the liquid sheets that rupture are curved rather than planar. However, the impact of the sheet curvature on fragmentation remains largely unexplored. Here we show that multiple ruptures on curved liquid sheet produce spinning twisted ribbons and ejecta, distinctly different from the outcomes on planar surface. We proposed a simply model to describe the spinning, which agrees with experimental results. We studied the evolution of the twisted liquid sheet and the formation of secondary droplets. Our study explains a universal and visually striking phenomenon. Moreover, since the spinning motion alters the direction of ejecta, the actual travel distance and distribution of ejected droplets may deviate from the predictions of conventional axisymmetric models.
