Shock-induced size segregation of bidisperse particles*

Numerical simulations are performed to quantify particle size segregation of a planar shock wave passing through a suspension of bidisperse particles. The ratio between large and small particles is 30. A new framework coupling Lagrangian particle tracking (CFD-DEM) for small particles with an immersed-boundary method for large particles is presented. The gas-phase is discretized using a high-order energy-stable finite-difference scheme with localized shock capturing. A soft-sphere collision model with an efficient neighbor detection algorithm accounts for the contact between particles. Size segregation and particle curtain spread will be quantified. One-dimensional statistics will be presented to guide coarse-grained two-fluid model development.
