Proper orthogonal decomposition of fluidized particles*

Since Lumley's [1] paper in 1967 the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) has served as a powerful statistical tool for fluid flow characterization. However, when facing multiphase flows, and in particular particle-laden flows, the method has its shortcomings. In this presentation the solid particle phase is treated in a Lagrangian manner to arrive at the particle-POD (PPOD) method. The PPOD gives a statistical alternative to current model-based methods such as MP-PIC [2][3].
