Design and Assembly of a Barium Ion Quantum Simulation Testbed*

We describe the development and implementation of a surface ion trap system optimized for quantum information processing with barium ions. The system features a hybrid individual addressing scheme with ultra-low crosstalk for two-photon coherent Raman transitions. It integrates fiber-based acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) on one side of the two counter-propagating Raman laser beams and an acousto-optic deflector on the other. The fiber-based AOMs allow for phase, frequency, and amplitude control of lasers targeting each ion. The vacuum chamber includes complex in-vacuum components, such as a custom wire harness that provides 100 electrical connections to the trap, optimizing vacuum pressure and optical access. Additionally, the chamber contains three atomic sources: natural abundance barium in both metallic and salt forms, as well as a sub-microgram quantity of radioactive Ba-133 salt.
