Engaging undergraduates in Nuclear Data research*

We report on an initiative aimed at boosting undergraduate involvement in STEM through an interactive visit to the National Nuclear Data Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The activities, developed as part of a broader push to increase diversity in STEM fields, offered students an in-depth look into nuclear physics and nuclear data via engaging lectures and practical laboratory activities.

The visit encompassed introductory sessions on nuclear physics, experiential lab exercises focusing on isotope identification and radiation protection, along with computer exercises and seminars highlighting the significance of nuclear data in reactor physics and non-proliferation efforts. The activities were presented to over 150 undergraduate students in 6 different events. Student feedback highlighted the effectiveness of the event in sparking interest and deepening their understanding of nuclear physics for applications and nuclear data research.
