Beam Test of the First Prototype of SiPM-on-Tile Calorimeter Insert for the EIC Using 4 GeV Positrons at Jefferson Laboratory*

A high-granularity calorimeter insert is important for extending the acceptance in pseudorapidity in the central detector for the future EIC.

A proof-of-concept 40-channel prototype of the calorimeter insert was constructed and tested with 4 GeV positrons in Hall D at JLab in 2023. 

The prototype integrates iron absorbers and plastic scintillator tiles read out with silicon photomultipliers.

The observed energy spectra and 3D shower shapes align closely with simulation predictions, confirming the effectiveness of the design, construction techniques and calibration approach. 

A scale-up prototype is under construction and will be tested at BNL this year, further insights and outcomes are anticipated.
