Crystal and Glass Scintillators for Precision Calorimetry*

High performance scintillator materials are needed for particle identification and measurements of energy and momentum of electromagnetic particles in modern nuclear physics experiments. Achieving high-quality science at nuclear physics facilities requires the measurement of particle energy with excellent calorimeter energy resolution in the momentum range 0.1 – (10-20) GeV/c. Crystals such as lead tungstate (PbWO4) have been used in precision calorimeters, e.g., in all four experimental halls at the Jefferson Lab. However, crystal production is slow and expensive, and in particular for large volume calorimeters. Scintillating glass has recently received much interest worldwide and promising glass candidates have emerged. In this talk we will review high precision crystals and discuss recent progress to establish scintillating glasses as an alternative high performance scintillator material. We will particularly focus on calorimeter applications at the Electron-Ion Collider.
