Broadening participation in nuclear physics through target programs*

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University has embarked on aggressive efforts to establish or facilitate targeted on-campus and nationwide initiatives spanning from pre-college to professionals, including communities, in order to broaden participation in the nuclear science workforce. They span across higher education institutions, national facilities and professional organizations, reaching out to diverse marginalized populations (e.g., African American, Hispanic, Native Americans, people with different abilities, etc.). While some noticeable changes have occurred over several decades, paradigm shifts and major trend changes are yet to be seen. The aforementioned programs aimed at addressing these shortcomings. A review of some of these programs will be presented and discussed.
