The COHERENT low-energy neutrino scattering program at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source*

The COHERENT collaboration studies neutrino scattering for nuclear physics, non-standard interactions and dark matter searches, using multiple detector targets located in Neutrino Alley in the basement of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The SNS provides a low-energy, intense, pulsed, pion decay-at-rest neutrino beam. Measurements of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) cross section on a CsI(Na) and in a liquid argon (LAr) were published, and an initial CEvNS result on Ge was recently announced. To continue studying the neutron number squared dependence of the CEvNS cross section, a 2.4 ton NaI detector array was partially deployed, with initial data being analyzed for optimization. To reduce the neutrino flux uncertainty below the current 10%, a D2O detector was deployed with initial data under analysis.  In addition, measurements of the charged-current rates of electron-neutrino scattering on ¹²⁷I and neutrino-induced neutron production on Pb were both observed to be lower than expected.  A detector to measure neutrino induced fission on thorium was deployed with data currently being analyzed. A review of measurement results, an update on plans for completing the multi-ton NaI array for a CEvNS measurement, and a discussion of additional detectors to investigate the observed inelastic cross sections will be presented.
