First Science with the FRIB Decay Station*

The first experiments at FRIB were performed on very neutron-rich nuclei near the drip line and in the so-called island of inversion. The investigated nuclei are systems where the complexity of the nuclear-many body problem is revealed in isotopes far from beta-stability leading to the revision of traditional concepts, here it is a breaking of the conventional shell closures. The experimental result was very representative of the scientific goals for FRIB. Access to a broad range of unstable and exotic isotopes at FRIB will enable discoveries and in-depth studies on nuclear systems with an unusual combination of protons and neutrons. The excitement of this first FRIB run was due to the fact that the accelerator and separator systems of FRIB and the measurement concepts implemented within the new FRIB Decay Station Initiator were used for the first time in a "real" and successful experiment. In my talk, I will present the results of the first experiments in the context of the broader scientific goals of FRIB.
