S01.00001: Ignition on the National Ignition Facility: a historical perspective Invited Speaker: Douglas Larson This is the first in a series of three talks that describe the recent historic achievement of ignition – a burning fusion plasma that produced more energy than was delivered by the laser. This talk will summarize the 60-year path that led up to ignition on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), highlighting the broad international collaboration, physics "firsts", development of enabling technologies and construction of the NIF. The subsequent talks will describe the ignition experiments and implications for the future. |

S01.00002: Ignition on The National Ignition Facility Invited Speaker: Joseph E Ralph Indirect-drive Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have, for the first time, demonstrated fusion ignition in the laboratory with a target gain |
Tuesday, April 18, 2023 9:42AM - 10:18AM |
S01.00003: Toward an Inertial Fusion Energy Future Invited Speaker: Tammy Ma The achievement of fusion ignition on the National Ignition Facility in December 2022 demonstrated more energy generated out of the plasma than was delivered by the lasers, thus establishing the basic scientific feasibility of harnessing fusion in the laboratory as an energy source. Fusion energy may be the ultimate clean and nearly limitless energy source, offering energy and climate security. In this talk, we will discuss recent developments in the field, as well as the many challenges and opportunities in the road ahead to realizing Inertial Fusion Energy. |
