M19.00001: Mobile Making: A hands-on STEM afterschool program led by undergraduate facilitators Ashley N Corey, Lemuel M Johnson, April Nelson, Edward P Price For nearly a decade, we have operated a university-based afterschool STEM program in local schools and community centers. Mobile Making is designed around research-based principles for effective afterschool programs and reaches approximately 750 youth each year, the majority of whom are members of underrepresented minority groups. In weekly, 90-minute activities we seek to make STEM relevant for participants, and promote their STEM self-efficacy and interest. A diverse group of CSU San Marcos students ("STEM Ambassadors") lead sessions and serve as near-peer mentors. Ambassadors are important role models and connections to the university for the diverse youth participants, many of whom would be first-generation college students. One of the program design principles is to incorporate university-community partnerships. Collaborative, two-way partnerships help support and sustain engagement, and the involvement of site personnel (K12 teachers, administrators, and afterschool coordinators) is essential to our program. We will share outcomes, lessons learned, and describe how other universities can engage in or initiate similar efforts. |

M19.00002: Community partnership approach to informal physics education with PISEC Jessica R Hoehn Partnerships for Informal Science Education in the Community (PISEC) is an informal physics program that connects university volunteers (undergraduate and graduate students) with local K-12 students to engage in inquiry-based physics activities and engineering projects in a playful, engaging, and welcoming environment. Through authentic, mutually beneficial partnerships with schools and community organizations, PISEC aims to create transformative and empowering experiences for marginalized youth, in which youth are agents of their own scientific exploration and begin to see themselves as scientists. We will discuss the PISEC community partnership approach to informal science education, including (a) how we develop and sustain partnerships and (b) how this partnership orientation is infused throughout the program. We will briefly share some research results on the impacts of the program on both student participants and university volunteers, and will discuss how this approach can help us expand what counts as science and who can be a scientist. |

M19.00003: Little Shop of Physics Cherie Bornhorst, Heather Michalak, Brian Jones, Misty Brave, Jesse Piña, Matt Janis The Little Shop of Physics program at Colorado State University has presented in-person and virtual programs to nearly one million K-12 students in the region and around the world. We've had an impact on the students we reach, but the impact on the members of the team—and our partners—is just as crucial. In this session, 5 members of the Little Shop team—at Colorado State and at a partner institution, Oglala Lakota College—will share stories about how taking part in informal science education as faculty, as students, and as K-12 educators has informed their experience. Please be sure, as well, to check out our hands-on science activities in the exhibit area. |
