B03.00001: Quark Net: Bringing 21st Century Physics Directly to Teachers and Students Invited Speaker: Shane Wood QuarkNet is a long-term teacher professional development program that immerses teachers in cutting-edge physics research and supports them in developing instructional strategies that bring authentic scientific and engineering practices into their high school classrooms. QuarkNet began in 1998, and continues to support collaborations between physics teachers and mentor physicists at over 50 centers at universities and national labs across the United States today. This talk will describe some of the experiences, resources, and strategies that QuarkNet provides for high school teachers to formally infuse 21st century physics into the curriculum. |

B03.00002: Data Activities Portfolio: A Research Based Approach for Infusing 21st Century Physics into the High School Classroom Invited Speaker: Deborah Roudebush QuarkNet is a project funded by NSF, ATLAS, CMS and Fermilab with additional support from participating universities. My role in the project is to oversee the Data Activities Portfolio (DAP), a compendium of activities to help teachers incorporate 21st Century physics into their curriculum. This talk will explain the DAP structure that follows guidelines for Effective Teacher Professional Development as described by Linda Darling-Hammond, Maria E. Hyler, and Madelyn Gardner, with assistance from Danny Espinoza. We will provide data about the efficacy of our activities in the classroom. |
