Y07.00001: Science and Politics in the US Congress Invited Speaker: James Jensen The role of Congress in the making of Science Policy is subject to a number of key influences—Partisan politics, the skill of the players in Congress, personal relationships and more. I will attempt to draw a brief history of Congress role in science policy, pointing to key periods of strength and weakness in the system, with the intent of illuminating the difficulties of the current administration, where the role of science in policymaking is being reduced and degraded. Particular attention will be paid to the sometimes false notion that partisanship is always the key element—a sometimes false notion that leads people to misunderstand the way Congress actually functions. Y07.00003: Role of Scientific Societies in Science and Politics Invited Speaker: Mary Woolley The Research!America alliance advocates for science, discovery, and innovation to achieve better health for all. We urge Congress and the administration to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) at levels that keep pace with scientific opportunity. We also advocate for federal funding for a legislative and regulatory climate that stimulates growth in private sector research and development. [Preview Abstract] |
