AAPT2.00001: Active Learning in Astronomy for Future Teachers Kendra L. Wallis Active learning techniques are becoming widespread at all educational levels. The University of Texas at Arlington has implemented active learning guidelines as part of its quality enhancement plan. As part of a joint project between the College of Science and the College of Education, we have created courses designed to teach science to students planning to become teachers, while simultaneously teaching how to teach science. Several methods have been used to implement active learning in large lecture classes, including the use of clickers, peer instruction, and lecture tutorials. Challenges as well as future changes will also be discussed. [Preview Abstract] |

AAPT2.00002: Designing a Zero-Energy Home for the Colorado Highlands Lionel D. Hewett This presentation illustrates how the basic principles of physics (particularly, structural integrity, energy resources, and heat transfer) can be used to design a (hopefully) comfortable home for a high altitude environment of prolonged sub-zero winters and sweltering summertime highs. The resulting design incorporates a monolithic dome structure imbedded into a hillside utilizing both passive and active solar energy components to regulate its internal temperature and solar technology (photovoltaic collectors and wind turbines) to supply its off-grid electrical needs. AAPT2.00003: Physics Strung Out Bill Franklin The argument seems to be between physics first and physics last. Can't we all just get along? I suggest that physics spread out as far as possible, or at least as far as practical, is better than either extreme. [Preview Abstract] |
Friday, March 23, 2007 4:06PM - 4:18PM |
AAPT2.00004: The Development of AP Physics Exams Beth Thacker The development of an AP Physics exam will be discussed. While the talk will be of interest to those who teach AP Physics classes, it may also be relevant to people who are interested in assessment and the development of exams in general, at both the high school and university level. AAPT2.00005: Brief on Four Years of Science Graduation Requirement Hugh Henderson This session will summarize the latest news on the State Board of Education's new policy on requiring four years of science for students entering high school in 2007 and graduating on the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement plans. Implications for curriculum alignment, course offerings, and teacher training will be discussed. A high school round table discussion on these issues will also be offered at a separate time during the TSAAPT meeting. [Preview Abstract] |
