C4.00001: High-pressure studies on the calcium-ion-sensitive fluorophore Fluo-4 Eric W. Frey, Paul Urayama Fluorescence-based methods for intracellular calcium ion sensing are well established at ambient pressure. Because calcium ions play a ubiquitous role in cellular signaling, extending techniques of intracellular calcium-sensing to high pressures would play an important role in understanding the large variety of piezophysiologic effects. Here, we characterize the intracellular calcium-ion-sensitive fluorophore Fluo-4 under hydrostatic pressures up to 500 atm (50 MPa). Using an EGTA/MOPS solution as a calcium-buffer reference, we investigate the pressure dependence of the reaction \textit{pK} and determine the thermodynamic volume change associated with the Fluo-4 calcium-binding reaction. C4.00002: Biological method for nanophosphor synthesis Dongdong Jia, Tyler Laudenslager, Jenna Girardi Zygo and Asco fungi are cultivated to be able to grow in a salt solution with a concentration up to 1000 ppm. The salt components are Y(NO$_{3})_{3}$ and 1{\%} Eu(NO$_{3})_{3}$. In these two salts dissolved solutions the fungi are grown for a couple of days. With an effective diffusion mechanism, the Y$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ ions get into the fungi cells due to the concentration gradient. After the fungi are taken out of the original solution and being washed with distilled water, they are burnt in air at 1200 $^{o}$C. White powder of Y$_{2}$O$_{3}$:Eu$^{3+}$ nanophosphors were obtained. Because of the relative uniform of cell size and concentration, the nanoparticles are uniform and about 100 nm in size. The cells of fungi are actually acting as nanoreactors similar to emulsion, aerosol and other methods. [Preview Abstract] |
