F32.00001: Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Purdue University: from the Laboratory to the Market Invited Speaker: Ernesto Marinero The knowledge-based economy of the XXIst Century critically depends on the pursuit of knowldege, workforce developmnet and technology creation at our academic institutions. The role played by said institutions in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship is pivotal and an integral part of their mission in serving the public good. In this talk I will describe the tools that we have implemented both at the educational and research level in recent years at Purdue University to accelerate the translation of ideas to commercialization. |

F32.00002: Advancing Technology at NSF Invited Speaker: Barry Johnson The National Science Foundation (NSF) was created in 1950 with a mission "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense; and for other purposes". NSF's vision is "a Nation that creates and exploits new concepts in science and engineering and provides global leadership in research and education". NSF fulfills its mission and vision through investments in fundamental research that creates and discovers new knowledge; investments in translational research that catalyzes the transformation of knowledge into innovations that address societal needs; and investments in education and training that prepare the science and engineering workforce of the future. |

F32.00003: Sustaining Innovation in the Semiconductor Industry Invited Speaker: Dan Armbrust Innovation has both technology and business aspects and bridging the valleys of death from invention to commercialization requires constant adaptation as an industry evolves. In its early days, the semiconductor industry consisted of startups and spinouts, financed by venture capital. Beginning in the 1990s, advantages of specialization lead to the rise of foundries and fabless companies, which are now consolidating to a few dominant leaders in each competitive space. Throughout its history, the industry has innovated by effectively leveraging collaboration mechanisms to fund university research, produce technology roadmaps, conduct research and development and improve manufacturing practices. Significant innovation and entrepreneurship are necessary to realize the next growth wave of semiconductor-based solutions based on A.I and ubiquitous sensors (Internet of Things). However, indicators ranging from IPO’s to venture capital investment to chip design costs strongly suggest new business models are needed, and inspiration can be found in adjacent technology sectors such as software, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals. In this context, a new early-stage startup incubator called Silicon Catalyst has been launched in Silicon Valley and has been operational for three years. Its unique focus is on semiconductor solutions by creating a supporting ecosystem to address the prototyping needs of today’s chip design entrepreneurs. Limitations associated with continuing conventional scaling of CMOS (Moore’s Law) will challenge our ability to advance system performance. Optimistically, this will motivate the formation of new public-private partnerships to support concurrent innovations within the technology stack (materials, devices, computing architectures, algorithms and software). |

F32.00004: Space Innovation: The Aerospace iLab Initiative Invited Speaker: Randy Villahermosa The Aerospace Corporation is the nation's Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) dedicated to the space enterprise. We are uniquely positioned to provide technical advice and advance the state-of-the-art of science and technology for space missions. This is an unprecedented time for space, and not since the days of Apollo have we witness this level of space activity. Major tidal forces---technology advances in adjacent areas, business innovation from new players in the space sector, and the critical need to protect satellite systems from a wide range of threats---are driving change in the space enterprise. Innovation will play a critical role in the transformation of how the nation acquires and utilizes space capabilities, and Aerospace is at the forefront of these changes with our Innovation Laboratory, or iLab Initiative. Through the iLab Initiative, we are developing new approaches to develop and accelerate innovation in the search of the next big ideas in space. The lessons we've learned from the initiative have implications for your organization's and the nation's relationship with innovation. |

F32.00005: Innovating Towards a New Energy Future at TAE Technologies, Inc. Invited Speaker: Matthew C. Thompson TAE Technologies, Inc. is on a mission to provide our climate-threatened world with a new source of safe, affordable, abundant, and carbon-free power that addresses the global need for 24/7 on-demand electricity. Our aim is to deliver world-changing clean fusion energy technology as fast as possible. Starting with the end in mind – a fusion solution that delivers practical science, engineering integration and competitive economics – TAE developed a unique approach combining advanced particle accelerators, plasma physics, and an aneutronic fuel cycle. Our international team of over 160 is currently operating Norman (also called C-2W), our latest prototype device. Driving innovation at this scale requires an organization committed to, and optimized for, both technical and process innovation at all levels. This presentation will provide an overview of the business opportunity we pursue, our technical approach, and lessons learned building an innovation focused company. |
