1WDB.00001: Laser trapping of francium for the electron Electric-Dipole-Moment search Invited Speaker: Kazuo Tanaka We prepared for the precise spectroscopy of Francium (Fr) for search of the electron electric dipole moment at CYRIC, Tohoku University. Fr is produced by the fusion reaction by 18O supplied from by the cyclotron accelerator and 197Au as a target. Fr atoms are cooled and trapped by the laser cooling technique in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Then the trapped Fr in MOT will be transferred to an optical lattice system placed between electrodes for high-voltage apply. The spin precession of Fr atoms will be measured with the Ramsey fringe method. We have been promoting the development of the Fr producing part with 18O beam, and the laser cooling and trapping part using stable Rb atoms as offline experiments simultaneously. In this system, Fr trapping in MOT is a key component to link these systems and finalize preparations for the measurement. We found a sign of trapped atom in MOT in 2017 and proceed further trap experiments to observe obvious fluorescence from trapped atoms. Recent progress of this experiment will be reported. |

1WDB.00002: Status of Searches for the Neutron EDM Invited Speaker: Brad Filippone Existing limits on the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the free neutron have provided critical constraints on new sources of CP violation for more than 60 years. A new round of searches are underway with the goal of improving the sensitivity to CP violation by up to two orders-of-magnitude. The status of these new searches will be discussed, including recent progress on the nEDM experiment to be carried out on the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source. |

1WDB.00003: Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Search by the TUCAN collaboration Invited Speaker: Shinsuke Kawasaki Permanent electric diopole moments (EDM) in fundamental particles violate time reversal symmetry. Under CPT conservation, T violation implies CP violation. A precise measurement of an EDM may reveal the origin of matter dominate universe. The TUCAN (TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron source) collaboration aims to measure a neutron EDM at a sensitivity of $10^{-27}$ ecm, which is a 30 times better sensitivity than the current best measurement. The neutron EDM has been searched for using Ultracold Neutrons (UCN). UCNs are extremely slow neutrons which have a kinetic energy below several hundred neV. As a consequence, UCNs are totally reflected at the surface of certain materials and can be confined in a material bottle. Since a neutron EDM measurement sensitivity is limited by statistics, the TUCAN collaboration has been developing a high intensity UCN source on a dedicated proton beam line at TRIUMF. The UCN source is composed of a combination of a spallation neutron source and a superfluid helium UCN converter. First UCN production succeeded at TRIUMF in November 2017. Following this success, we have started to upgrade the UCN source and aim for a world’s highest intensity. Key components of the improvement are a new helium cryostat to remove high radiation heat load from the superfluid helium UCN converter and thus allow for higher proton beam currents on the spallation target. Furthermore, a liquid deuterium moderator shall be added in order to get a higher cold neutron flux at the location of the converter. In this presentation, the current status of the UCN source upgrading and experiment plans of the neutron EDM measurement will be discussed. |
