C14.00003: Recruiting, Preparing, and Supporting Physics Teachers with UTeach Dallas Invited Speaker: Mary Urquhart UTeach Dallas at the University of Texas at Dallas is one of the first cohort of UTeach replication sites and exists within ecosystem of programs for teachers and educational outreach in the Department of Science/Mathematics Education (SME) in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The program has had success overall in retention of graduates in the teaching profession, and despite not specifically targeted physics majors in recruitment has produced 9 physics degree holders with teacher certification since 2014, including two beginning as post-bacs, and currently has 11 physics majors in the pipeline. The synergistic overlap of UTeach Dallas with other SME programs supporting physics education will be discussed. [Preview Abstract] |

C14.00008: teachHouston: UTeach at a Minority-Serving Institution Paige Evans Faculty from the teachHOUSTON program and physics department have collaborated to build a physics teacher preparation program inclusive of the following endeavors:~streamlined degree plans, a physics inquiry course, an internship program, a scholarship program, and induction activities for the~\textunderscore rst three years of their teaching degrees. This has resulted in producing approximately three physics teachers annually.~ Prior to this collaboration, the University of Houston had not produced any physics teacher graduates in the previous decade. [Preview Abstract] |

C14.00010: teachHouston: The Streamlined Preparation Program at the University of Houston Jackie Ekeoba teachHOUSTON has an accelerated degree plan that targets those who already have a STEM degree (including career changers) or those who have only a few courses left that are seeking secondary STEM teacher certification. Students complete the same coursework as in the traditional~\textit{teach}HOUSTON program including quality coursework, field experiences, mentoring, and support; however, the curriculum is enhanced with the inclusion of culturally responsive pedagogy. Unlike a traditional pathway which generally takes place over the course of three to four years, this accelerated plan is completed within nine months. Students receive certification in Mathematics 7-12, Science 7-12, Physics/Mathematics 7-12, Life Science 7-12, or Chemistry 7-12. [Preview Abstract] |
