C08.00001: Online Physics: Enabling Student Success while Maintaining Your Sanity Jacqueline Dunn As campuses were forced to move their classes online in the spring semester of 2020, online learning was suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Teaching online in general is different than teaching online during a pandemic or campus closure. This presentation will highlight practices used under each circumstance, how and why online teaching during a campus closure should be different, and a discussion on what we can learn from suddenly taking traditional lectures to an online only format. Beyond the technical aspects of teaching online and converting a traditional lecture from the classroom to an online environment, methods utilized to decrease~both student and professor stress and frustration with having to adjust a new learning and teaching environment will also be presented. C08.00002: Puzzling Out Online Collaboration Evan Richards In my face-to-face courses, I teach in a studio learning environment, where cooperative group learning is at the heart of all of my courses. When we rapidly transitioned to online learning last spring, I quickly found out that the collaborative conversations that naturally arise when the students are working in teams on a shared, experimental set-up were dramatically diminished in online breakout rooms as they were working remotely. Hence, I decided to force the issue by bringing in a reform called a jigsaw activity. [Preview Abstract] |

C08.00003: Demonstration and Instruction in a Hybrid Classroom Meghan DiBacco Teaching during a pandemic has impacted all levels of education specifically in secondary science classrooms. During this year teachers across the world have pivoted to produce new ways to share materials with their students, with one of the biggest hurtles being bridging the gap between in-class and virtual students. The resources and techniques used during this year can help impact our future teaching and student engagement. During this presentation we will discuss the materials and techniques used to engage students and conduct alternative lab activities. [Preview Abstract] |

C08.00004: How I Encouraged Student Engagement While Teaching Online During the Pandemic Rebecca Forrest Many of us learned on the fly how to teach online in Spring 2020. While we had more time to prepare for our Fall 2020 online or hybrid classes, it was still a steep learning curve. I'll demonstrate how I use my iPad tablet to present, Microsoft Forms to administer Conceptual Questions, and share live demonstrations with my students during class using Microsoft Teams. Simple things such as encouraging students to communicate verbally or in the chat has helped with engagement and a sense of community in class. [Preview Abstract] |

C08.00005: Gains and Losses: The Balance of Pandemic Teaching Kenric Davies A year ago, we were all forced into the virtual world and asked to continue providing high quality education to our students.~ Since then, the terms "asynchronous" and "sanitizer" are in our weekly, if not daily, vocabulary and the school day looks very different from previous years.~ During this talk, I hope to show the gains that have been made in my personal teaching that balance the losses that I have felt along the way.
