AAPT-SPS1.00001: Dynamic Considerations of Collision Cart Motion Under the Influence of Magnetic Fields Kevin Boos, William Z. Nakhoda, J.W. Peters, Ken Taylor This paper characterizes the dynamic behavior of ``magnetic carts'' when subjected to a variety of magnetic barriers and wells. Judicious placement of permanent magnets along the track (both on and at the sides) provides for a classical simulation of concepts familiar to all students of physics. Neodymium magnets of varying dipole moments are used to study the forces, energy and motion of a magnetic cart moving under these varying influences. Conditions leading to simple harmonic motion in a well are discussed in terms of the amplitude of motion and the restoring forces. [Preview Abstract] |

AAPT-SPS1.00002: A Study of Buoyant Forces and Oscillations of Floating Objects Wlead Abubaker, Joseph Grund, Samuel Kidd, Ken Taylor This paper discusses various factors that affect the buoyant force of a liquid on an immersed object. The presentation considers such influences as liquid temperature, density and volume of fluid displacement. Different liquids are used in the study to compare the impacts of the various system parameters. An added feature of the presentation is a quantitative description of the periodic motion of a floating body as it oscillates up and down. Data are presented for objects of various shapes. In addition, comparisons with simple harmonic motion are made for each case. [Preview Abstract] |

AAPT-SPS1.00003: Optimal Conditions for Maximizing Projectile Range for Various Launch and Target Heights Sean Brim, Lindsay Turner, Cole Wrightson, Ken Taylor This paper characterizes the conditions that lead to maximum projectile range for a variety of launch and target heights. Both theory and data are utilized in the discussion. A CPO marble launcher provided a range of initial speeds and angles for study of the projectile motion. An interesting aside that will be briefly discussed was a study of the consistency of the launcher from shot to shot. [Preview Abstract] |

AAPT-SPS1.00004: The Expansion of Planetary Nebulae and Supernova Remnants Amee Salois, Kristen Allen, Teresa Musgrave, Michael Hibbs By using the various techniques provided by the Hands on Universe software, we were able to analyze archival and current images of both planetary nebulae and supernova remnants to detect possible dispersion. Archival images were obtained through internet resources and current images were obtained using the observatory at Tarleton State University. This has allowed us to test the effectiveness of such a program in high school settings. [Preview Abstract] |

AAPT-SPS1.00005: Effects of Real-World Research Projects on Student Motivation and Problem-Solving Skills Teresa Musgrave, Michael Hibbs High school students have difficulty with the application of science principles and with motivation to expand on their science education. We have conducted a project designed to address these issues by allowing the student to do real research using various tools in astronomy. Through the use of the Hands- On-Universe software and Tarleton State University's observatory, high school students have been able to define and research problems in astronomy. The effects of this research on the students is still under study, but preliminary indications are that students involved in this type of work develop better scientific problem-solving skills and are more motivated to work beyond the normal course load. AAPT-SPS1.00006: Propagating Literacy through Science Outreach Clint A. Greene Tyler Junior College's Society of Physics Student Chapter has worked with local elementary school teachers to develop an educational outreach program for science students. Since April 2006, we have lectured on and demonstrated captivating chemistry and physics phenomena. Our goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists by stimulating not only their minds but also their hearts. This presentation will cover the importance of science and technological literacy, our chapter's educational outreach program, and how other SPS chapters can create their own. [Preview Abstract] |
