D1.00001: Quantum Many-Body Physics with Ultracold Atoms Invited Speaker: Randall Hulet Ultracold atoms on optical lattices form a versatile platform for studying many-body physics, with the potential of addressing some of the most important issues in strongly correlated matter. In this talk, I will present experimental results on the characterization of the BEC-BCS crossover with ultracold atomic fermions ($^6$Li) and the detection of anti-ferromagnetic order in the three-dimensional Hubbard model, one of the paradigm models of strongly correlated physics. D1.00002: LIGO and the First Direct Observations of Gravitational Waves Invited Speaker: Brennan Hughey Einstein first predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916. A century later, the Advanced LIGO experiment observed these space-time ripples directly for the first time. This talk will provide an overview of the two binary black hole mergers observed by LIGO so far, along with some of the resulting astrophysical consequences of these observations. The current status of Advanced LIGO's second observation run and prospects for the future of the nascent field of gravitational wave astronomy will also be briefly discussed. [Preview Abstract] |
