Evaluation of Copper Stainless Steel Material Properties at Variable Strain Rates*

In this study a sintered copper, stainless steel, mixture was examined. Microscale mixtures combine the characteristics of constitutive materials and enable scientists to design material properties at the mesoscale. Given known material properties of stainless steel and copper a Mie Gruneisen equation of state was derived via a mixture model. Material strength properties from low to high strain rate were collected using a universal material tester, Hopkinson Bar and Taylor Impact test. The final fit of Johnson Cook strength coefficients were improved using a novel technique within Dakota to better fit experimental data to accurate numerical simulations based on optimized parameters. By evaluating prior expectations against experimental data, a posterior expectation of material properties superior to typical traditional constants is generated.
