Optimization of Material Properties for UV Resin in Shock Experiments*

UV resins can be used as a binder in energetic materials, but do not have well established material properties needed to accuratly predict responses to shock waves. This article presents the methods and results of an optimization campaign to determine the material properties for an additive manufactured UV resin. Material properties include equation of state and plasticity models, which will be optimized simultaneously. Optimization is performed using the multiple output genetic algorithm (MOGA) built into DAKOTA, in conjunction with shock simulations in CTH and data from six reverb experiments. The goal of the optimization campaign is to determine a set of material properties that minimize the error between experimental free-surface velocity traces and results from simulations. The experiments involved in the optimization were performed at 365 and 503 m/s, with UV resin flyers and copper, stainless steel, and aluminum targets.
