Vanadium Response at High Strain Rates and Large Strains*

While experimental platforms are increasingly providing data at strain rates above 10⁴/second, interesting questions remain about possible strain rate transitions in behaviors such as strain hardening behavior. Large-strain response is particularly challenging to observe in a quantitative manner. And for large-strain response, competition among behaviors such as strain hardening and thermal softening influences a material's propensity to undergo strain localization. Here we present the calibration and evaluation of models in light of data from a range of strain rates, including data recently collected at the Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source (DCS@APS). Our evaluation includes the use of a sub-scale treatment of shear-localization, and across the different strength models we see interesting variations in the predictions for the onset of strain localization (LLNL-ABS-844957).
