Proton Simulations and Timing for the BL3 Experiment*

The decay of a free neutron is the simplest form of beta decay which gives insight into the weak interaction. The BL3 experiment seeks to address the longstanding discrepancy between neutron lifetime measurements obtained via the beam method and the bottle method, crucial for accurately modeling the early universe and primordial helium abundance. This experiment utilizes the beam method, trapping and counting protons from neutron beta decay to determine neutron lifetime. By taking the ratio of the measured absolute neutron and proton rates, we are able to deduce the lifetime of the neutron. In this talk, I will present simulations of proton flight and detection using geant4. These simulations are integral for providing critical insights for optimizing the design of the physical detector and analyzing systematic effects. The simulations confirm and guide the design of a ramping potential inside the Penning trap that will help sweep protons with a reasonable travel time to the detector, thereby guiding the timing structure of the trap and DAQ system.
