Revealing Physical Properties of Emission Line Galaxies from HETDEX & ODIN using the CARRSSPipeline*

We present a new and improved approach to calibrating spectra taken with the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), which offers multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) over an 8′ field-of-view at resolutions up to R ∼ 3000, sufficient to resolve the 2.7 Å separated [O II] doublet to measure ISM electron densities. Other galaxy characteristics can also be measured through nebular emission spectroscopy including ionization parameters, velocity dispersion, dust reddening, metallicities, and star formation rates. Many of these measurements require flux calibration of spectra, which is highly challenging due to variable primary mirror illumination of the prime focus tracker, which moves as the sky rotates. After preliminary reduction up until wavelength calibration is carried out by RSSMOSPipeline, our Calibration And Reprojection for RSS Pipeline (CARRSSPipeline) offers a novel approach of using stars with SDSS spectra as spectrophotometric standards to perform flux calibration. Following flux calibration, the CARRSSPipeline then reprojects several individual settings onto a non-linear (exponential) wavelength axis spanning 3500 Å - 9500 Å, giving us full-optical coverage. We present flux measurements of objects from several masks observed in our program targeting emission line galaxies in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) survey and the One-hundred-deg² DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) survey. Resolved [O II] doublets allow us to measure and report electron density and velocity widths, as well as ionization parameters using [O III]/[O II], dust reddening using [Hα/Hβ], and metallicity determined from multiple indicators. Investigating these characteristics with this new approach will provide insights into the nature of emission line galaxies in HETDEX and ODIN.
