Color Center LED synthesis toward telecom quantum light generation

Photoluminescence of silicon color centers has shown they can be quantum emitters compatible with the telecom band. Here we present progress toward developing electrically stimulated emission from single color centers as new sources of quantum light. Photoluminescence (PL) of color centers requires a laser to excite carriers, while electroluminescence from color center embedded LEDs could provide an electrically-pumped deterministic source for single photons. In this talk, I will first present the fabrication process for LEDs in silicon, review the mechanism by which radiative recombination occurs in the p-n junction of these diodes and show PL of G and W color centers. I will then show the IV characterization of LEDs designed for W and G centers at both room and cryogenic temperatures and progress to date on light emission measurements.  Finally, I will provide an assessment of whether the LEDs could be used to enable electroluminescence of single color centers and quantum light sources.
