Luttinger liquid behavior of topological defects in 2D materials*

One-dimensional interacting electron gas is characterized by the breakdown of the Landau Fermi-liquid theory, and its properties are well understood by the Luttinger liquid framework. The edge states of various quantum Hall systems can also exhibit characteristic Luttinger liquid behavior. Here we perform first-principles calculations and analytical scaling analyses to show that the experimentally identified dislocations in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides can be best understood as Luttinger liquids in a large temperature range, as an analogue to the electric-field or layer-stacking domain wall in bilayer graphene.
