One dimensional systems exhibit unique physical properties that their 2D and 3D counterparts do not. In particular, Helium atoms in 1D are interesting as a model system due to their extreme quantum nature and well-known interactions. Recently, it has been shown that confinement of 4He inside the pores of a porous templated glass (MCM-41) preplated with a noble gas (Argon) exhibits behavior characteristic of a 1D Tomanga-Luttinger liquid. We are exploring the use of Cesium to preplate the pores, as Helium does not wet Cesium. Pores plated with Cesium would presumably create a more ideal 1D fluid that is isolated from the external environment. The reactivity and low vapor pressure of cesium make it challenging to work with. We will describe techniques developed to preplate the pores and characterization of the resulting nano-engineered material using nitrogen and helium adsorption isotherms.
