N29.00001: Introductions: Panel Speakers
Panel Speakers:
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor; Carleton College
Mario F Borunda; Oklahoma State University-Stillwater
Rona Ramos; Yale University
Willie S Rockward; Morgan State University
We begin with the opportunity to learn more about each panelist– who they are and how they came to be where they are. We have four topics of discussion, with a 10 minute break after the first two topics. We will introduce the topics and ask the same question to each of the four panelists. We will rotate the order for panelists to answer for each question. Our theme is a discussion surrounding the question of “Is Physics colorblind?” |

N29.00002: Is Physics colorblind?
Invited Speaker:
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor
Panel Speakers:
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor; Carleton College
Mario F Borunda; Oklahoma State University-Stillwater
Rona Ramos; Yale University
Willie S Rockward; Morgan State University
In the intro, we talked about some definitions where “blind” is not being able to see, “colorblind” is not being able to see color or race, and “colorblindness” as a view that we can treat individuals as equally as possible, without looking at race, culture, or ethnicity. In Physics, institutions and/or people, are we colorblind? Each panelist has an opportunity to answer this question in order of the panel speakers listed. |

N29.00003: Communicating the importance of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Physics
Invited Speaker:
Mario F Borunda
Panel Speakers:
Mario F Borunda; Oklahoma State University-Stillwater
Rona Ramos; Yale University
Willie S Rockward; Morgan State University
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor; Carleton College
As physicists, we have a culture of communicating, in detail, important observations about the phenomena and processes of systems we are interested in. What about topics on inclusion, diversity, and equity in Physics? What are the challenges in creating a space to convey the importance of these topics? Each panelist has an opportunity to answer this question in order of the panel speakers listed. |

N29.00004: Myth of meritocracy in Physics
Invited Speaker:
Rona Ramos
Panel Speakers:
Rona Ramos; Yale University
Willie S Rockward; Morgan State University
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor; Carleton College
Mario F Borunda; Oklahoma State University-Stillwater
Open question: Is individual merit always rewarded in Physics? Each panelist has an opportunity to answer this question in order of the panel speakers listed. |

N29.00005: Being antiracist in Physics
Invited Speaker:
Willie S Rockward
Panel Speakers:
Willie S Rockward; Morgan State University
Martha-Elizabeth Baylor; Carleton College
Mario F Borunda; Oklahoma State University-Stillwater
Rona Ramos; Yale University
For this topic, let’s define Physics as our customs and practices – how we uphold our institutions (universities, industries, etc), how we celebrate achievements, how we communicate the importance of our work, how we elevate people in our field. For you, what customs and practices in Physics do you feel are most important to take a look at in finding systemic solutions? Each panelist has an opportunity to answer this question in order of the panel speakers listed.
