Numerical simulations of the ionic wind and ozone production by positive corona discharges in humid air*

The ionic species and the ionic wind produced by corona discharges are useful for flow control and air purification technologies due to their effectiveness in generating ions and inducing airflow without moving parts. However, humidity has a crucial influence on these discharge characteristics. This study investigates the impact of humidity on ionic wind and ozone production in DC positive corona discharge using numerical simulations. The 2D steady-state simulations model the chemical kinetics of humid air, examining the spatial production of ozone and charged species, as well as the ionic wind velocity under varying humidity levels in a geometry with parallel wire electrode. The results reveal that in humid air, H3O+(H2O)n ions dominate, contrasting with O4+ ions in dry air. Humidity significantly reduces ozone production and slightly decreases the ionic wind velocity and the discharge currect. Preliminary comparisons with experimental data show good agreement and highlight the critical role of humidity in modifying the discharge characteristics and ozone generation. This research enhances the understanding of corona discharge behavior in different atmospheric conditions, with implications for industrial applications and air purification technologies.
