Enhanced Hot Electron Generation in intense Laser-matterInteraction with External Magnetic Field*

We investigate the enhanced generation of hot electrons from solid magnetic targets with a homogeneous static magnetic field of 0.1 Tesla when irradiated by intense laser pulse. This study involves analyzing the angular distribution and energy spectrum of electrons, comparing magnetized and non-magnetized targets. Experimental findings reveal an enhanced electron flux and energy cutoffs in the presence of the magnetic field, while also indicating a suppression of electron flow along the target surface. In order to gain deeper understanding of the role of the external magnetic field, we carried out comprehensive 2D3V particle-in-cell simulations. Our experimental results align well with the scenario where the electron gyro-frequency is lower than the laser frequency. These findings not only contribute to our understanding of the phenomenon but also inspire the design of new experiments. Overall, our study and its results demonstrate promising prospects for generating and controlling intense laser-driven guided hot electron sources through the application of an externally applied magnetic field.
