High-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape has the ability to dramatically improve the efficiency of electrical systems and provide a new pathway for fabricating non-planar magnets for stellarators. However, one must consider the magnet’s integrity when designing these coils. Torsional and hard-way bending strain must be minimized to ensure the superconductor does not fail. To account for strain [1], one can optimize the winding angle of HTS tape for a given shape of a filamentary coil. To preserve magnet integrity, one could integrate strain parameters into coil optimization in addition to optimizing for confinement. We have defined an objective function that considers strain parameters during filamentary coil optimization. We demonstrate that coils optimized with this objective function can reduce torsional and hard-way bending strains. This objective function aims to promote compatibility of the Columbia Stellarator Experiment coil design with HTS.
