General Atomics Advanced Tokamak Fusion Pilot Plant*

General Atomics is pursuing integrated fusion pilot plant (FPP) designs that will lead to electricity production in a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) commercial plant. Key accomplishments are the creation of integrated design tools that combine plasma physics with engineering and neutronics modeling, maturation of a novel breeding blanket design, control-level simulations that ensure robust controllability with FPP relevant diagnostics, and industrial thermal cycle modeling. Based on these accomplishments, a 200 MWe compact steady-state advanced tokamak fulfills stakeholder requirements with key attractive features to improve commercial viability: (i) Maximized power density that minimizes size and capital cost of the facility (ii) Minimized risk of operational transients, such as disruptions, by operating at reduced current and high safety factor that maximizes uptime, and (iii) Sustained operation that minimizes operational & maintenance costs and maximizes capacity factor and lifetime by avoiding cyclic stresses inherent to pulsed concepts.
